Doxies With Moxie

Or, Dachshunds Are People Too ...

I've had dogs my whole life. I cannot think of a time when I have not had the pleasure of a dog, or two or three, at my side.

Mostly I've had medium to large dogs. In fact, for many years I trained Labrador and Golden Retrievers to become 'assistance' or 'service' dogs. I never ever considered working with a small dog, let alone owning one.

But that all changed one Christmas morning about 8 years ago. I rushed downstairs that morning to find a little, tiny, smooth-haired dog with a long snout and equally long ears peeking out from under the Christmas tree.

It was love at first sight.

Rudy, a chocolate dapple miniature dachshund, was just 7 weeks old when Santa left him under our tree. And boy, was he a little fireball from the start - Happy, loving, full of personality, and stubborn as they come. He wormed his way into all our hearts and became the King of the House.

Rudy was such a hit that we decided to get him a companion. So about a year later an 8-week-old wirehair mini doxie nameed Oscar joined the family. Oscar and Rudy took over our house and ran roughshod over our 5 acre farm. Together they ruled the land, and all the other animals went along with it.

Now, don't let anyone tell you that Dachshunds are all the same. They're not. Not only do they have different personalities, just like people do. But their temperment and personality traits can differ depending on the type of coat they have.

Long-hair Dachshunds tend to be the more laid back, mellow member of the Dachshund breed.

Smooth coated Dachshunds tend to be a bit more 'on point' and vocal.

While the wirehair Dachshund, with it's bit of terrier added to get the 'wire' coat, is the little clown with an attitude.

A Dachshund is a perfect companion whether you have access to a yard, or you're an apartment dweller. Because of their small size, they don't need a lot of room to get their exercise.

But don't be fooled into thinking they are foofy dogs who sit on pillows eating bon-bons. These dogs are hounds. They were bred to go after badgers - and they'll risk life and limb doing it.

They LOVE to go - go hiking, camping, fishing, running on the beach or in the park - And they'll run with the best of them. But at the end of the day, they're favorite place to be is as close to you as they can get - at your feet, beside you in your chair, or best of all ... in your lap touching your heart.

Contributor's Note

I am a 'dyed in the wool' Weiner dog lover. Can you tell?
